Bicycle Security: Keeping Your Ride Safe

Bikes are freedom, joy, and an important part of everyday life for many of us. At the London Bicycle Café, we want to help you keep that freedom secure.

Where to Park

Whenever possible, choose a highly visible area with quality bike racks and plenty of foot traffic. Thieves are less likely to act when people are nearby and watching. Look for racks that are solidly anchored and in open, well-lit spots.

When visiting downtown, the best place to park your bike is right here at the Café. Our racks are covered, highly visible, and benefit from constant activity.

You can relax with a coffee knowing your bike is close by, and we’re only a short walk from the Market and Riverwalk. Even in this ideal location, it’s still important to use a good quality lock every time you park.

Project 529 Database

We now carry Project 529 registration packages and stickers. These help deter thieves by showing that your bike is registered. If the worst happens, registration makes it easier to recover your bike and reunite it with you. The Project 529 Online database can help the police service identify and recover bikes that have gone missing.

Multiple Locks

A combination of two locks can be a great deterrent. For example, pair a sturdy U-lock with a heavy-duty chain or a folding lock. Different lock types require different tools to break, and that extra effort often makes a thief move on.

You’ll find the angle grinder resistant ABUS GRANIT Super Extreme 2500 and Hiplok DX1000 in the shop.

Invest in quality hardware

Choose a trusted brand like ABUS for your main lock. A strong lock is a one-time investment that protects your ride for years. Use a second, lighter lock for wheels or accessories.

Lock the frame and a wheel to something solid

Always secure your frame and at least one wheel to a sturdy object. Avoid short posts or racks that can be lifted, and make sure your lock isn’t resting close to the ground.

Most thefts happen at home

In our eight years of operation, about 99% of the thefts our customers reported happened at home, not downtown. Every one of those bikes was unlocked in a yard, garage, or on a porch. Take a moment to secure your bike, even at home.

Alarms and sound deterrents work

We’ve seen alarms stop theft in action. In one case, a customer’s ABUS chain lock was cut on campus, but the Alarm Box’s sound scared the thief away. Audible deterrents can make a big difference.

We’re all in this together

When cyclists look out for each other, we all win. Report suspicious activity, park near other bikes, and help support secure parking around the city. We’re proud to offer a safe spot for cyclists in the heart of downtown.
